This costume was originally created for the 1999 premiere of Medeia, directed by Satoshi Miyagi(SPAC). The production reimagined the Greek myth of Medea, setting the story in a Japan reminiscent of the Meiji era.

 

The garment shown in the photo belongs to Medeia, the protagonist. Her costume symbolizes her fierce resolve and solitude. The tattoo motifs—highly unconventional for women in that historical period—were intentionally chosen to express her defiance and inner strength.
